Open Source vs Proprietary - Part 2

Read Part 1When I started to write about open source versus proprietary software, the aim was to discuss why Acqal is committed to open source in general and TYPO3, Magento, and other open source systems, in particular. If no adequate open source option is available, we have no problem using a proprietary solution. At Acqal, our goal is to use the best software for each client's individual needs. In any case, I figured this would be an easy series of articles to write, but I realized that I needed to back up my statements with references and I didn't...

I will follow up on my last posting about open source software in a future article. But, right now, I am on a double tangent, one TYPO3 related, the other not even computer related.

Regarding the open source discussion, I have a lot to say about open source versus proprietary content/web management systems, but for now, I am going to put into action what my mouth and pen says. I use MS Office because “everyone uses it” and I have to in order to be compatible with software my clients use. Yet, Open Office is pretty darn compatible with MS Office from what I have heard and I am going to give...

Landing Page 101

In the last three years I’ve been involved in search engine marketing quite intimately, even more specifically in landing page creation and testing. It’s an ongoing battle making sure you’re maximizing your conversion rates, lead flow, lead quality, cost per lead, etc. More importantly it keeps you on your toes as no one can afford to miss out on a good lead, especially in these days of recession. If you have any form of online presence it is imperative that you have a landing page.

There are a few main elements that comprise a landing page; copy, layout and call to action. Of course there...

What's a CMS?

CMS is short for Content Management System. This system allows non-technical users to make changes to websites with little or no training. Using a graphical user interface, authors can easily and simply create and edit pages, create and edit content, insert images and multimedia files, schedule content delivery, moderate visitor comments, and much, much more. All these traits combine to deliver a truly dynamic website. A top-quality CMS requires an experienced company to install and customize it, but daily management is geared to non-technical administrators.

Open Source vs Proprietary - Part 1

I have always been fascinated and puzzled by the continuing debate over which is better to use, open source or proprietary software.First, there is terrible and great software in both categories, so for this article I am discussing good software. With that assumption in mind, I have long been amazed that any company would pay for something it can get for free. Yet, in the United States, this is the norm. There is an impression that if it isn't expensive, it must not be any good. One would think that shareholders might object to billions of dollars being spent on software that could be obtained...

Too Many Hats?

This being my first, ever, blog entry I’ve spent a fair amount of time trying to think of a good topic to write about. In the peak of my work day today I realized that I wear a lot of different, virtual hats. There’s the marketing hat, the design hat, production, sales, accounting… well, you get the picture. On a good day I’m able to roll with the punches and methodically switch from hat to hat without delay. On the average day when something takes me away from the task at hand, it can take me a bit to get back into what I was working on.

For example (if you’re a creative person, you will...
