Acqal is Going Through Some Changes
By: Nicole Johnson
Most of you have now heard that Acqal’s CEO, Michael Cannon, decided to resign his position with Acqal at the end of February. Michael left in order to start a family and to make career changes. We wish him the best of luck. With that said, Virgil Huston and I have been moving forward in beefing up the Acqal team. We’re very excited by the changes and the upcoming growth.
Acqal has added a team of six TYPO3 gurus that will be assisting us with support items as well as projects. We’ve also added a Senior Technical Advisor, Ries van Twisk. Ries will be working with us on those projects that...
Creating a MySQL Database for TYPO3 using CPanel
By: Virgil Huston
Today, I created a development site for a support client's web site. A development (dev) server allows you to try all kinds of things without affecting the live site. Not everything can be done in the draft workspace on a live site, so dev sites are essential. There are a number of ways to copy a site to another server, but as I was going through the process, I thought that some things tend to be taken for granted by writers of instructions. One of these things is actually creating a MySQL database for the new site. This applies to copied sites and completely new sites. Some writers assume you...
TYPO3 Tips and Tricks - Mass Copy and Move
By: Virgil Huston
We are currently working on a web site migration to TYPO3 project that has thousands of pages. We imported the pages, but there is now a new site map, so many of the pages must be shifted around, placed in different sections, etc.
TYPO3's mass copy / move and paste functionality has made what could be an unbelievably tedious and time consuming task into a much quicker and streamlined process. For situations like this, mass copy / paste is essential, saves us time and saves the client money. It is truly a win-win situation.
I have created a short tutorial to explain the basics of this...

TYPO3 Extension Manager Beginner Tip
By: Virgil Huston
TYPO3's Extension Manager is a great way to easily import extensions into your web site. But, how many times have you searched for an extension you know is there and had no results?
This may be because your settings on what extensions the manager is allowed to search for keep you from finding the extension you are looking for.
There are two settings, one for reviewed extensions and one for all extensions. Reviewed extensions are certainly completely safe, but so are many unreviewed extensions. If your are set to search only for reviewed extensions, you will miss many others.
As long...
Reflections on T3CON09 Part 2
By: Virgil Huston
T3CON09 officially started on Thursday morning with the tutorial sessions. I was torn between Ron Hall's "A Framework for TemplaVoila" and Riona Kuthe / Jochen Weiland's "How to customize the TYPO3 Backend for the needs of each editor." I ended up in Ron's tutorial and it was fantastic. Check out his TV framework at templavoila.busynoggin.com/.Here is how Ron explains it:"TemplaVoila is the most powerful of the TYPO3 templating methods. With this templating extension an experienced developer can produce sites with very flexible layout options for the content...
The Ultimate TYPO3 Resource List
By: Virgil Huston
Or at least the start of the ultimate list :-)As I look over the results from our TYPO3 Training Methods Effectiveness Survey and finish up our paper for presenting at T3CON09, I see that there are a lot of methods used to learn TYPO3. Everyone has a different learning style, there is no one correct way and use of multiple methods is the norm.Among those methods are reading or watching online resources such as blogs, wikis, tutorials and articles. Not all learning requires formal courses. But it is not always easy to find the resources you need and they are scattered all over the web. So, we...

Keeping up with TYPO3
By: Virgil Huston
Like all things in the Information Age, keeping up with TYPO3 is a double edged sword. There is tons of information available, but the problem is keeping up with all. This is a good problem to have, so I am not complaining, but I am struggling to find a solution on:How best to make sure you find all the relevant informationThis is perhaps the easiest part, especially now that Twitter has arrived on the scene. Twitter allows one to find new sources of information, articles, blogs, new and updated extensions, as well as helping with meeting new people. You can set up groups of people you...
